The
first Indonesian night under the banner of the Indonesian American
Association (IAA) was conducted on Saturday, December 2, 2006. Titled
“Nostalgia Indonesia 2006”, this four-hour cultural event displayed a variety
of singing, dancing, and other performances at the stage of the Mountain View Community
Center in Scottsdale.
The banquet hall was packed with an audience of 200 people.

The
event officially started with the opening prayer by Dr. John Nurman, the IAA secretary, followed by Star-Spangled
Banner, sung by Kartika Agung.

In
his welcoming remark, Dr. J. Andy Soesilo, the
President of IAA, highlighted the mission of the organization and the purpose
of the “Nostalgia Indonesia 2006.” He emphasized the spirit of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) within the IAA and the
principle of “Gotong Royong”
(Working Together) as the most important rule in running the association.
About the event, he emphasized that the goal of “Nostalgia Indonesia” was to
revisit our past memories about Indonesia, and to create a
memorable event for our children as a remembrance for the future.

In
this occasion the IAA president also introduced chairpersons of various
Indonesian groups in Phoenix
that support the IAA. They are (as shown in the photo): Meryl
Simanjuntak (Permias), Fifi Yuliana (KKI), Kris Pribadi (AzGRA), Jaap Damwijk (Amerindo Club), Luther Bolung
(City Harvest International), and Ronnie Andikasim
(Kelompok Pengajian).

The
first item in the agenda of the night was Panji Semirang. A Balinese dance performed by dancers Sabrina Suhartono and Serena Suwarno.

A
group of singers, called the “Baby Boomer Blues”, sang a number of Indonesian oldies,
such as Ayun Ayun, Den
Haag, Nasi Goreng, and Bila Anggrek Berkembang. The group consists of Kim Meelhuysen,
John Nurman, Rika Liem,
and Lenny Sutandar, On the keyboard was Art Smith.

Other
dances following Panji Semirang
were: the Mask Dance, the Hawaiian Dance, Tari Melayu, Tari Kecak, and Jaipongan. Our
children also contributed in this dance category with their Dolanan dance. Another important contribution by our
children was the fashion show. Although not considered under the dance
category, it is worth to mention the impressive Indonesian Martial Art
performance by Eric Kruk and friends.
In
the singing category, the list of songs performed by our
talented singers were: America
the Beautiful, Bengawan Solo, Bermain
Layang Layang, Bintang Kecil, Butet, Pulau Samosir, Rayuan Pulau Kelapa, and Romo Ono Maling. In the singing
category, Priska Tandyasraya
opened the night with her song Sepanjang Jalan Kenangan, translated as Along
the Memory Lane, which nicely fit with the theme of the event. Randy Trouerbach was on the keyboard.

sang both songs, accompanied by her father Jean Reksodiputro
with his guitar.

famous Batak songs. Sandra Bolung
sang Butet with Randy Trouerbach
on the keyboard. Sandra also sang Pulau Samosir, accompanied by her husband Luther Bolung with his guitar.

Romo Ono Maling is an old
Javanese song. This song was performed by Esti Suhartono with hushand Ayon Suhartono. Andy Soesilo was on the keyboard.
